Songkran 2011

The biggest celebration of the year is coming. From April 13th to April 15th the country celebrates Songkran – Thai new year and water festival. The fun spills over to the weekend with some of the best events happening on the 16th and 17th April making this a great time to visit Bangkok.

The historical origins of the festival was to visit elders and pay respect by gently sprinkling them with water. It is now celebrated by people roaming the streets with containers of water, water guns or even hoses drenching everyone in their reach.

Last year’s events were restrained by political unrest so expect even more wet, fun filled celebrations this time around.

Special Events

Most bars and clubs organise special events with extended hours.  It goes without saying that the bars of Soi 2 and 4 and both DJ Station and GOD will be bursting at the seams all weekend long.

In Silom the party atmosphere takes over the main road which is closed to traffic each evening.

gCircuit

Elsewhere in Bangkok, organisers gCircuit will stage three big dance parties on April 15th, 16th and  17th. gCircuit know how to put on a really great party with stunning productions and a world class international DJ line up.

Last year gCircuit won praise for the successful relocation of their Songkran parties (to the appropriately named Queens Park Hotel) away from an area occupied by anti-government protesters. Unfortunately in September gCiruit was forced to cancel a three night event at the last minute – but organisers did the right thing and refunded tickets.

This time, with a brand new warehouse venue, a huge production, great DJ line up and a far more stable situation in Bangkok everyone is looking forward to what should be the best gCircuit parties we’ve seen so far.

Bearbie (Silom Soi 4), Bangkok’s only dedicated bar for bears and their chasers will be hosting Songkran parties on the 12th (9am – 2am) , 13, and 14th (5pm – 2am).  Swim wear is the bear necessity on the 13th and 14th.

Babylon & Chakran

After a long night of dancing you might fancy a more intimate celebration. Check out the special events, including two foam parties, at Bablyon Sauna and Spa. Expect this venue and its restrooms to be busy throughout SongKran.  Likewise Chakran Sauna is holding special events including ‘Erotic Exotic Shows’ during the holidays.

Songkran Essentials

- Book your flights and hotels as soon as possible. Songkran attracts thousands of visitors from abroad.

- Expect to get wet – particularly in the evening. Dress accordingly. Shorts and tee shirts are recommended. Don’t wear flip flops as you will not get into some bars and DJ Station or GOD.

- Place valuables such as your mobile phone and wallet (or banknotes) in a small plastic bag to keep them dry.

- Pace yourself. Celebrations last for nearly 5 days with some of the best events such as gCircuits closing party at Fallabella happening on the 17th.

- Water related eye and ear infections are common during this period. If you get any symptoms go immediately to your local pharmacy (Boots etc) for medication.
